38th Annual Gala
*Honoring Vernon Scott*
Vernon Scott began his college career with the study of Architecture at The University of Virginia, and very soon moved to his further passion which brought him to New York to study dance: first at NYU Tisch School of the Arts, under Larry Rhodes and finally working towards and receiving his BFA from The Juilliard School under Martha Hill. He immediately bounced into the professional world at Rush Dance under Patrice Regnier, les Noce with The Feld Ballet, and the leading role of The Eagle in Robert Wilson’s the CIVIL wars, choreography by Ulysses Dove. He then found his first “dance home” in the Elisa Monte Dance Company where his years there taught him the true meaning of being in a New York based modern dance company. There he met friends that are among his nearest and dearest today. After EMDC there were periods of commercial work as a dancer and choreographer in music videos for Jose Luis Rodriguez, Eye and I and Natalie Merchant. There were also guest artist appearances with Kraig Patterson’s Bopi’s Black Sheep, Iren Hultman Dance, and Richard Move’s Martha At Mother. Indeed, there were benefit performances with Jennifer Lewis in Los Angeles; with Tina LeBlanc at Carnegie Hall; and with Nona Hendrix at The Armory for Valentino’s 30th Anniversary. Thru it all is heart remained with modern dance and he is greatful for the experinces provided by dancing with Steven Petronio Dance Company, Ohad Naharin Dance Company, Pilobolus Dance Theater, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company and the Mark Morris Dance Group. He found his second dance home with Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project where he also played the role of Rehearsal Coordinator, and had the unbelievable opportunity to set his own work Layers on the company. While there he had the great fortune to work directly with many choreographers such as Neil Greenberg, Meg Stuart, Mark Morris, Paul Taylor and Merce Cunningham. Post full time dance career, he initially moved to become an Executive Assistant to Valerie Moran President of Grange Furniture who played a huge role in his administrative career by teaching him the entire business and soon promoting him to National Director of Showrooms. Her influence began a trajectory that led to National Public Relations Manager for Aga Ranges, Northland and Marvel Refrigeration. Following the corporate career, Vernon began to feel the need to give back to the dance community and committed to serving on the boards of Full Circle Productions which produced 360 Degrees Dance Company and The Martha Hill Dance Fund, where he has been president since 2010. When looking for the next full time position he found his third home, when he offered his expertise to the Baryshnikov Arts Center where he started as Senior House Manager and rose to Special Events Manager and Executive Assistant to Artistic Director Mikhail Baryshnikov. After 7 wonderful years at BAC, he most recently became Assistant Director of Special Events at The Joyce Theater. He is most happy that he is able to continue to give back and see young dancers grow and thrive as he now also serves as Dance Panel Chair for The National Young Arts Foundation. Vernon thanks all his mentors who have provided guidance for him along the way – and those that are still doing so today.
