Welcome New Dancers!
EMD is excited to introduce two new company members and one new apprentice joining us this fall.
MALIK KITCHEN (dancer) began his formal dance training at The School for Creative & Performing Arts in Cincinnati, Ohio. He began his professional career at the age of 17 with a role on the MTV television series, Taking The Stage. In 2010, Malik was awarded a scholarship to attend The Ailey School. While studying at Ailey, Malik had the opportunity to work with choreographers such as Robert Battle, Ronald K. Brown, Loni Landon, Jennifer Archibald, and Sonia Dawkins, among others. Malik also studied at LINES Ballet School as well as Springboard Danse Montreal where he worked with choreographers, Victor Quijada and Anne Plamondon. Malik has performed professionally in works by William Forsythe, Elisa Monte, Francesca Harper, Bradley Shelver, Jennifer Archibald, Carlos Dos Santos Jr. and as a guest with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for a special cast of 50 performance of Revelations. He has appeared on national and international television, and has danced for rising female rapper, Angel Haze. Malik has also performed with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra under the direction of Hope Boykin and has worked with companies such as The Steps Repertory Ensemble, Ballet Inc., Abarukas, Arch Dance Company, and The Francesca Harper Project.
JOVONNA PARKS (dancer) is a native of Philadelphia where she began her dance training. The Gwendolyn Bye Dance Center is where she began her intense formal training in ballet, Horton, and Graham techniques. She attended the Ailey/Fordham BFA under the direction of Ana Marie Forsythe and graduated in 2012 with her BFA in dance. While in college JoVonna was a member of Ballet Hispanico's second company BHdos. Upon graduation she was invited to work with John-Mark Owen Presents... in his premiere of Requiem. She has attended summer intensives including Dance Theater Harlem: Masters and Mentors, Pennsylvania Governor's School of the Arts and Jacob's Pillow. She has had the pleasure of working with and performing works by Camille A. Brown, Ronald K. Brown, Donald McKayle, Hofesh Shector, Didy Veldman, Robert Battle and many others. In addition to dancing JoVonna currently teaches at Brighton Ballet Theatre: School of Russian American Ballet at Kingsbourgh. Previously she has taught at Brooklyn Dance Project and Centerstage East Brunswick. She also works with Ballet Inc.
JASMINE CHIU (apprentice) Jasmine Chiu was born in Hong Kong and raised in Richmond, B.C., Canada where she began her training at The Richmond Academy of Dance. She then continued her studies at The Boston Conservatory and graduated summa cum laude in 2014 with a B.F.A. in Dance. During this time she spent her summers training at Jacob’s Pillow, Nederlands Dans Theater, Springboard Danse Montréal, and San Francisco Conservatory. Jasmine has had the privilege of performing in works by Bill T. Jones, Trey McIntyre, Judith Jamison, Francesca Harper, Karole Armitage, José Limón, and Gerald Arpino. Most recently she started working with Brice Mousset’s Oui Danse and is thrilled to be joining Elisa Monte Dance this season as an apprentice.
